A fully equipped trekking e-bike with a step-through frame: no bar to swing a leg over, so you step through, sit, and put a foot flat on the road at the lights. When the hill on your usual route comes up, the Bosch Performance Line CX motor takes it on 100 Nm of torque, as Kalkhoff publish it, through 11 Shimano Cues gears.

Kalkhoff call it the Endeavour 3 Excite. Book a test ride at our Ivanhoe showroom and take it up a hill. We size you first, and we service it after.

John says...

’A fantastic looking e-bike. It has all the best Bosch technology plus practical features, along with really clean styling. Come in and ride it. We'll size you, set the saddle and bars, and you can take it up a hill before you decide anything.‘

Kalkhoff Endeavour 3 Excite

What riders use it for

  • Getting on and off without swinging a leg over a bar, on a frame Kalkhoff size for riders from 150 to 196 cm tall
  • The hill on your usual route, on 100 Nm of torque and 11 gears
  • A boost to cross a busy intersection or get up the last pinch home
  • Riding to work in your work clothes, under full mudguards
  • Long weekend rides on paved shared paths, comfortable for hours
  • Riding with your partner again, each of you sized to a frame
  • Coming back to riding after years off the bike
  • A longer day out with panniers, planned around Kalkhoff's published range and its conditions
  • The weekly shop and the errands that used to take the car, on a rack rated to 27 kg

What it is not for

It is built for sealed roads and shared paths, not for trail or off-road riding. Assistance stops at 25 km/h, as Kalkhoff declare, so it is a bike for getting there, not for speed.

The step-through frame means no bar to swing a leg over: step through, sit, and put a foot flat on the road at the lights

In Australia this bike comes as a step-through, which Kalkhoff call Wave. It keeps the top tube out of your way, so getting on stops being the hard part. Bring your body height and we will size you in person.

The climb is done on torque, and Kalkhoff publish 100 Nm from the Bosch Performance Line CX: ride it up a hill and feel it

The 250 W figure is the motor's rated output. Hills are climbed on torque. The motor pairs those 100 Nm with gears running from 11 to 45 teeth at the back, so you spin up a steep street instead of grinding.

The parts that wear are built for the motor

The gears are Shimano Cues Linkglide, 11 speed, with a Shimano CN-LG500 chain. Shimano designed Linkglide for e-bike force and rate it at up to three times the life of their standard Hyperglide cassette on an e-bike. Fewer trips back for worn gears.

Service, comfort and carrying

Dolomiti services every bike it sells in its own workshop at Ivanhoe, and the first service at 300 km is included

After that, plan a service every 6 to 9 months if you ride daily, or once a year if you ride on weekends. When something needs looking at in year three, the people who sold you the bike already know it. We were Australia's first dedicated electric bike retailer.

An Australian owner on Reddit, on buying from a shop:

"I bought from a shop... let me do a test drive before I committed. I use it almost daily (for the last 7 years) and I have it serviced (big service) at the shop around once a year. It's still going strong!"

Ride in with dry work clothes

Full-length mudguards with a front mud flap keep road spray off you. The lights run off the main battery, so there is nothing separate to charge. The rack takes the work bag, and the rear light brightens when you brake.

A Melbourne rider on X:

"My daily commute is 60mins of moderate exercise + I arrive not sweaty in my work clothes."

Long, unhurried rides are comfortable from the first hour to the last

A suspension seat post, a Selle Royal Essenza Plus saddle, Ergon GC10 grips, trekking riser bars on an adjustable stem and an upright sitting position. The SR Suntour XCM32 coil fork, with 80 mm of travel, takes the bumps out of uneven paths. Schwalbe Green Marathon touring tyres, 55 mm wide with reflective sidewalls, bring puncture protection, so fewer flats.

F.A.Z. Kaufkompass rode the Endeavour 3 Excite and wrote, translated from German:

"you do not feel your backside even after tours lasting several hours." And: "Nothing rattles or vibrates here."

Ride side by side again

Four frame sizes mean two riders of different builds can each be sized. Come in together and we will size you both.

If it has been years, start with a test ride

We size you, set the saddle, bars and stem, and you ride. Asked what they would have done differently, the top answer from e-bike owners in one large Reddit thread was: "I would have bought it sooner."

The errands that took the car ride home on a 27 kg rack

The MIK HD rear carrier is rated to 27 kg and has side rails for panniers. MIK bags, baskets and crates click on and lock.

Battery, weight, lights and brakes

A matched Bosch system: the battery lifts out to charge inside

The Bosch PowerTube 600 Wh battery sits inside the down tube and comes out on a key lock. Motor, battery and Kiox 300 display are one Bosch Smart System, and Bosch instruct that a Smart System battery is charged only with an original Bosch Smart System charger.

It weighs 29 kg with the battery in. You notice it when you lift the bike, not when you ride it

The battery lifts out at about 3.0 kg. Walk assist on the Kiox 300 display has the motor push the bike at walking pace while you walk beside it, up a ramp, a driveway or a kerb.

The rear light brightens when you brake, so the driver behind sees you slowing

It is a Trelock COB Line LED built into the tail of the rack. A sensor brightens it under braking, with no extra wiring. Up front is a Herrmans MR10 LED headlight. F.A.Z. Kaufkompass, translated: "in the dark the Kalkhoff is easy to see from behind."

Trelock explains its brake-sensing rear light, video in German
Trelock, who make this bike's rear light, show how its sensor brightens the light under braking. Video in German, on YouTube.

Hydraulic disc brakes stop it

A 180 mm rotor up front and 160 mm at the rear, so you can rely on them going downhill.

It comes ready to ride

Lights, full mudguards with a mud flap, the rear rack, an adjustable rear stand, a bell and grips with locking collars are all on the bike. Nothing to add before the first ride.

Range and choosing your size

Kalkhoff publish up to 120 km for this bike, and they name what changes it: headwind, ambient temperature, the total weight on the bike and your seating position

  • Headwind takes distance off the ride home.
  • Cold weather lowers range. In winter, Kalkhoff advise putting the battery in just before you set off.
  • The more weight on the bike, rider and luggage together, the shorter the range.
  • How you sit changes it too.

Bosch say range cannot be worked out exactly in advance. Bring your usual route on the test ride and we will talk it through.

Before you book, check two things

First, your body height against Kalkhoff's frame sizes. Second, where the bike will live: it is 29 kg with the battery in, and the battery comes out to charge inside.

Kalkhoff's frame sizes by body height

  • 43 cm frame: body height 150 to 166 cm
  • 48 cm frame: body height 160 to 186 cm
  • 53 cm frame: body height 174 to 191 cm
  • 58 cm frame: body height 187 to 196 cm

Book a test ride at our Ivanhoe showroom and take it up a hill.

Questions people ask

How far will the Endeavour 3 Excite go on one charge?

Kalkhoff publish up to 120 km for this bike. Headwind, ambient temperature, the total weight on the bike and your seating position all change it. Bring your route on the test ride and we will work it through with you.

Is a 250 W e-bike enough for hills?

250 W is the motor's rated output. Hills are climbed on torque, and Kalkhoff publish 100 Nm for this one. Ride it up a hill from the showroom and see.

How heavy is it?

29 kg with the battery in. The battery lifts out at about 3.0 kg, and walk assist pushes the bike up a ramp while you walk beside it.

What size e-bike do I need?

Kalkhoff size this bike by body height, in four frame sizes covering riders from 150 to 196 cm. The step-through has no bar to swing a leg over. We size you in person at the showroom.

Who services it after I buy it?

We do. Dolomiti services every bike it sells in its own workshop at Ivanhoe, and the first service at 300 km is included.

Can I charge the battery inside?

Yes. The battery lifts out on a key so you can charge it indoors. Charge it only with an original Bosch Smart System charger, as Bosch instruct. The ACCC's own advice is to buy from a reputable supplier and use the charger that came with the product.

Won't a strong motor wear out the gears?

The cassette is Shimano Cues Linkglide, designed for e-bike torque and rated by Shimano at up to three times the life of their standard cassette on an e-bike.

Who makes Kalkhoff e-bikes?

Kalkhoff Werke GmbH of Emstek, Germany. Kalkhoff were founded in Germany in 1919 and describe themselves as Germany's specialist in e-bikes. They rate 4.5 out of 5 from 570 reviews on Trustpilot. The motor, battery and display on this bike are Bosch, and we service it here.

Is it legal to ride in Victoria?

Kalkhoff declare it a pedelec with assistance to 25 km/h and a 250 W rated motor. Road rules are set by each state, so check Victoria Police's e-bike page or your own state's.

What if someone tries to steal it?

The battery comes out on a key, so the most valuable part goes with you. A secure bike cage at the station and specified insurance are worth asking about.

How is the Excite different from the Endeavour 3 Move?

Same battery, fork, tyres and rack. The Excite adds the 100 Nm Bosch Performance Line CX motor, 11 gears instead of 9, the Kiox 300 colour display, a suspension seat post and the brake light.

What warranty does it come with?

Kalkhoff cover the frame for 10 years for the first owner, when the bike is registered with Kalkhoff within eight weeks of purchase. Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if the goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.
