What's included?
- Family kit on the FAMILY build, with room for up to two children (approved to 50 kg)
- Double-leg kickstand on FAMILY, so the bike stands on two legs while you lift the children on
- Cargo front carrier on touring, vario and rohloff, for a bag or the shopping up to 8 kg
- Spoke guard as standard, so lashing straps and little feet stay clear of the spokes
- First service included at 300 km, in our own Ivanhoe workshop
At the school gate, you step through the Riese & Müller Multicharger3 Mixte longtail cargo e-bike with your child settled on the back. Then you ride away on 26-inch wheels, and it rides like a normal e-bike.
The top tube sits low, so your foot goes through the middle of the frame, past the seated child. Dolomiti sells it and services it in Ivanhoe, so you can ride it before you decide. It takes on the school run, the shop and the trips you would make in the second car.
John says...
’With children on the rear rack you can't swing a leg over the back, so on the Mixte you step through the middle of the frame instead. That's what I see in our showroom. Bring your own child seat to Ivanhoe and ride it loaded, because the maker says to check which seats suit which kit. And our workshop looks after it, with your first service included.‘
Riese & Müller Multicharger3 Mixte
A longtail cargo bike has a long rear deck behind the rider, where the children or the shopping ride. Riese & Müller calls the Mixte a longtail cargo bike with a lowered top tube.
Step through with the children already aboard
With a child on the rear rack, you can't swing a leg over the back. On the Mixte the top tube sits low, a 32 cm stand-over on both frame sizes, so your foot goes through the middle of the frame and your child stays settled in the seat.
"So i can step over the middle bar without kicking my daughter out of her seat."
An owner with a child seat fitted to a Riese & Müller Mixte (r/CargoBike forum, September 2025)
Parked at the kerb, the bike stands on two legs while you lift the children on. FAMILY has a double-leg kickstand as standard, and every equipment kit adds a bipod stand.
Then it rides like a normal e-bike
The wheels are 26-inch, bigger than on the compact longtails, and Riese & Müller describes the Mixte as "as agile as a normal e-bike". On touring, vario and rohloff the handlebar is a comfort bar.
"I love that it has 26" wheels and rides like a normal bike."

The trips you now make in a second car
The school drop-off, the weekly shop, the ride to work: the rear carries the children or the shopping, and on touring, vario and rohloff the cargo front carrier takes a bag or provisions up to 8 kg.
What it is for, day to day
- the weekday school or kindergarten run with one or two small children
- the weekly shop, with the children along
- a commute that starts with a drop-off
- a second child arriving, so that two children now come on every trip
- a day out at the park, the beach or the lake
- the climb home on a hilly route, on a Cargo Line build
It suits families with one or two children aged 1 to 6 on the daily run (the Family kit is approved to 50 kg), riders from 1.60 to 2.00 m across the two frame sizes, and loads up to 65 kg on the rack within 175 kg in total. If your family needs to carry more than two children, or more than one larger passenger, ask us which Riese & Müller cargo bike carries more.
Carrying children on the Multicharger3 Mixte
The rear, and what rides on it
The rear rack is rated to 65 kg within a 175 kg gross vehicle weight, on both sizes and on every build. A child seat fits on the rack, and four equipment kits set it up for your family. FAMILY comes with the Family kit; on touring, vario and rohloff the kits are options.
- Family kit: room for up to two children, approved to 50 kg. A sturdy outer bar and a second bar for the children to hold, a backrest and seat cushion, sideloaders that work as footrests or carry bulky objects, and a bipod stand. Or take a crate measuring 60 x 40 cm instead.
- Family kit Plus: a comfortable seat with the Safety bar, a bipod stand and a weather cover on all sides, for up to two children approved to 50 kg, or a 60 x 40 cm crate. The cover has tinted viewing windows, and its side and rear walls roll up in warmer weather. The upper part folds fully forwards for getting in and out, and the lower part keeps spray off the children's legs and holds 95 litres of goods. Riese & Müller says it left fibreglass rods and PVC film out of the cover.
- Passenger kit: up to two children, approved to 65 kg, with a foam seat, handles, footrests and a bipod stand.
- Cargo kit: two 33-litre bags and a bipod stand. The bags are water-repellent, close with a roll-top and fit by hook-and-loop with no tools. They compress against the bike to leave room for passengers on the carrier, and a strap holds an add-on battery or a drinking bottle.
The maker's rules for carrying children
Riese & Müller's child-transport document covers the Mixte and sets out what is permitted, so plan your set-up from this list.
- Without optional equipment (load up to 65 kg): one child aged 1 to 6 in a child seat directly behind the saddle, or two children aged 1 to 6 in child seats, with the heavier child directly behind the saddle and a rear seat load of up to 10 kg.
- With the Passenger kit (load up to 65 kg): the same two set-ups, plus one child aged 1 to 6 in a seat with one child from 7 years riding without a seat (the child seat fitted at the rear, up to 10 kg), or one child from 7 years riding without a seat, as close to the saddle as possible.
- With the Safety bar (load up to 50 kg): one or two children aged 1 to 6 in child seats, one child aged 1 to 6 in a seat with one child from 7 years without a seat, one child from 7 years without a seat as close to the saddle as possible, or two children aged 7 to 9 without seats, both as close to the saddle as possible.
Before every ride: check the child-transport rules where you ride, and check the load and how the bike handles. Always lift the children onto the seat, because the bike can topple if they climb on by themselves, and with two children the heavier one always sits directly behind the saddle. With the Safety bar and no extra child seat, the seat cushion and backrest must be fitted correctly, and children without a child seat should know to keep still and make no jerky movements. Two child seats can get in the way of the bike lock and the pedals.
Range, battery and choosing a build
How far will it go?
Bosch's Range Assistant gives an estimate for every build and assist mode, and every figure below assumes a total weight of 100 kg, bike included. The bike alone weighs 30.1 to 31.2 kg, so that leaves about 70 kg for the rider and any luggage: one rider and no child. Children aboard add weight, and more weight uses more charge, as do hills and the higher assist modes.
The other conditions Bosch sets: an average speed of 18 km/h, a cadence of 60 rpm, some inclines, mostly good asphalt, hybrid-bike tyres, light breezes, summer and a mixed tour. Bosch's estimates by assist mode, in kilometres (all approximate):
- FAMILY (Performance Line PX, PowerTube 625 Wh): ECO+ 236, ECO 154, TOUR 110, TOUR+ 128, AUTO 107, CARGO 88, eMTB 104, SPORT 94, TURBO 87.
- touring (Cargo Line, PowerTube 750 Wh): ECO+ 256, ECO 149, TOUR 117, TOUR+ 123, AUTO 115, CARGO 97, SPORT 102, TURBO 96.
- touring with the PowerMore 250 Wh add-on: ECO+ 343, ECO 200, TOUR 157, TOUR+ 165, AUTO 154, CARGO 130, SPORT 137, TURBO 129.
- vario and rohloff (Cargo Line, PowerTube 750 Wh): ECO+ 249, ECO 146, TOUR 114, TOUR+ 120, AUTO 112, CARGO 95, SPORT 100, TURBO 93.
- vario and rohloff with the PowerMore 250 Wh add-on: ECO+ 334, ECO 196, TOUR 153, TOUR+ 161, AUTO 150, CARGO 127, SPORT 134, TURBO 125.
"The calculated data comprises estimates and approximations that may vary from the actual result. The precise data will vary, depending on the type of use and the external influences. Furthermore, no liability will be accepted for the correctness of the determined values."
Bosch's own note travels with these figures
Riese & Müller says the PowerMore 250 Wh add-on is only "as big as a drinking bottle and weighing just 1.6 kg", and says you can "just attach the energy reserve and continue riding for another 50 km without the need to stop and charge". That 50 km is the maker's own claim and is separate from Bosch's estimates above. The maker suggests the add-on for a longer ride or one that involves a climb.
To plan your own route with the children aboard, ask us at Ivanhoe, or ride it loaded on a test ride.
Choose the build for your route
There are four builds, FAMILY, touring, vario and rohloff, in two frame sizes and four colours, with a wide set of options. Every build, size, colour and option can be ordered, and we have direct access to the maker. If you customise the build, allow about three months for it to arrive.
- A flat school run with one or two small children: FAMILY. It comes with the Family kit and the double-leg stand, and it has a Bosch Performance Line PX drive (up to 90 Nm), a 625 Wh battery and 10-speed gears on a chain.
- A hilly route, or a loaded climb home: touring, or rohloff for steep climbs with a load. All three of touring, vario and rohloff carry the Bosch Cargo Line drive (up to 120 Nm) and a 750 Wh battery. As Riese & Müller puts it, the higher the torque, the more powerfully the engine can start up and accelerate, which matters when you pull away from the kerb or climb with a load on the rear.
- A long commute plus the drop-off: touring or vario, with the Bosch PowerMore 250 Wh add-on on top of the 750 Wh battery.
- One child from 7 years, or one larger passenger: touring, vario or rohloff, with the Passenger kit (approved to 65 kg).
- Rain and cold mornings with the children: touring, vario or rohloff, with the Family kit Plus and its weather cover on all sides.
Chain or belt: FAMILY and touring run a chain. Vario runs an Enviolo continuous hub and rohloff a Rohloff E-14 14-speed hub, both on a Gates CDX belt, so there is no chain to oil on those two.
Bosch eBike ABS is available on touring, vario and rohloff. Bosch says it can prevent the front wheel from locking, even if you suddenly brake hard on grippy tarmac or slippery gravel paths. It also controls braking pressure to improve stability and steering on slippery surfaces, and its rear wheel lift control reduces the chance of the rear wheel lifting under extreme braking. Every build has a spoke guard as standard.
The 47 cm frame suits riders from 1.60 to 1.80 m, and the 51 cm frame riders from 1.75 to 2.00 m. A rider between 1.75 and 1.80 m falls in both, and if two of you will share the bike, ride both sizes at Ivanhoe.
Service and reviews
Looked after in Ivanhoe
Riese & Müller was founded in Darmstadt in 1993. We service every Riese & Müller we sell in our own workshop at 1075-1087 Heidelberg Road, Ivanhoe, and your 1st service is included at 300 km. After that, book a service every six to nine months for daily riding, or once a year for weekend riding. We were Australia's first dedicated electric bike retailer, and our first shop opened in 2012.
See it ridden
MountainBIKER, a Spanish-language bike magazine, reviewed the Multicharger3 Mixte vario in November 2025. The reviewer calls it "estable, cómoda y sorprendentemente ágil" (stable, comfortable and surprisingly agile) and says it "se comporta con la naturalidad de una ebike convencional" (it behaves with the naturalness of a conventional e-bike). The video is in Spanish.
Questions we are asked
Which child seats fit the kit I choose?
Ask us before you buy. The maker says to ask your dealer which child seats are compatible with each kit, so bring the seats you have and we will tell you which ones the maker approves for your kit.
How far will it go with the kids on the back?
Bosch's estimates above are for 100 kg in total, bike included: about one rider and no child. More load, hills and higher assist modes use more charge, and the 750 Wh builds take the PowerMore 250 Wh add-on. To plan your own route with the children aboard, ask us at Ivanhoe or ride it loaded.
Which battery suits a long daily trip with the kids?
Touring, vario and rohloff carry a Bosch PowerTube 750 Wh, and the Bosch PowerMore 250 Wh add-on is available for a longer ride or one with a climb. FAMILY carries the PowerTube 625 Wh.
Will we outgrow it in a couple of years?
The maker's rules carry on past the child-seat years. With the Passenger kit, one child from 7 years can ride without a seat, as close to the saddle as possible, and with the Safety bar two children aged 7 to 9 can ride without seats, within each kit's limits. For heavier passengers, ask us which Riese & Müller cargo bike suits.
Is it too heavy or long to handle and park?
It is 193 cm long on the 47 cm frame and 195 cm on the 51 cm frame. It weighs from 30.1 kg (FAMILY and touring) to 31.2 kg (vario and rohloff, 51 cm), with the battery and before pedals, a lock chain, a kit or a child seat are fitted. Try it at the shop and see how it handles.
Is the step-through frame steady with weight on the back?
Parked, it stands on two legs: FAMILY has a double-leg stand and every equipment kit adds a bipod stand. Riding, the frame carries the maker's ratings on both sizes, 65 kg on the rear and 175 kg in total. Feel it loaded on a test ride at Ivanhoe.
Which build for our hills?
Touring, vario and rohloff carry the Bosch Cargo Line, up to 120 Nm, and rohloff adds the 14-speed Rohloff hub. FAMILY has the Performance Line PX, up to 90 Nm. Test ride the build you are considering.
Can I tow a trailer behind it?
Yes for two-wheel trailers with a single attachment point, and for tagalong trailer bikes. A single-wheel trailer is not compatible. Check the legislation where you ride, and ask us about the right trailer hitch mount and other accessories.
Will it get stolen?
The maker lists an ABUS Adaptor Chain 2.0 130 cm and an ABUS Shield X+ lock. Ask us which suits where you park.
Can it carry an adult, or more than two children?
It is made for up to two children, one larger passenger or your luggage, within a 175 kg total and 65 kg on the rack. For bigger loads, ask us which Riese & Müller cargo bike carries more.
Can a dog ride on it?
The Family kit takes a crate measuring 60 x 40 cm in place of the seat. Ask us which set-up suits your dog.
Do I need a licence to ride it?
Road rules differ by state, so check your state's e-bike rules. The maker gives assistance up to 25 km/h on every build.
Who looks after it once I own it?
We service every bike we sell, in our Ivanhoe workshop, and your 1st service is included at 300 km. Before you decide, test ride it at Ivanhoe.
Book a test ride
Feel the step-through and the 26-inch ride for yourself at our Ivanhoe showroom, 1075-1087 Heidelberg Road, or call 03 9982 1440. Bring your own child seat, try it loaded, and if two of you will share it, ride both sizes.
