Focus Aventura2 6.7 FS

The Focus Aventura2 6.7 FS is a step-through e-bike with suspension front and rear. There is no bar to swing a leg over: step through, sit, and lower the saddle with the dropper seatpost so both feet go flat at the lights. Then the 120 mm fork and 100 mm rear shock take the jolt out of kerbs, potholes and gravel, while the 75 Nm Bosch Performance Line motor does the climbing.

Focus Aventura2 6.7 FS step-through e-bike

The short trips are where this bike earns its keep. Step through at the gate, ride to the shops or the café, put the kickstand down and load the shopping on the 20 kg rack. Mudguards keep the spray off, and the integrated Litemove headlight (100 lux) comes with the bike. In a Queensland University of Technology survey of e-bike owners, 75% of owners said they would otherwise have driven for their shopping.

At the weekend, ride past the end of the bitumen. Focus rates this bike for sealed paths, gravel roads and trails with moderate climbs, with drops of 15 cm or less. The SR Suntour XCM 34 coil fork gives 120 mm of travel, the Edge-X R rear shock gives 100 mm, and 75 Nm of Bosch torque keeps you rolling on the rises. It is not an e-mountain bike, so jumps and steep technical descents are not what it is for. For those, ask us to show you an e-mountain bike in the showroom.

Riding to work, the Bosch drive helps on every street. At the red light, lower the saddle with the dropper and put both feet down. The mudguards, headlight and rack are already on the bike. In the same survey, 58% of Queensland owners said they would otherwise have driven to work.

Hills are judged in newton metres, and this is 75 Nm from a Bosch Performance Line mid-drive on Bosch's smart system. Bosch lists 600 W maximum power and up to 340% support. You still pedal, and the motor adds to what you put in, up to 25 km/h.

Getting on and off is built into the bike. Step through the low frame, sit, and lower the saddle with the dropper: the drop is 100 mm on size S, 125 mm on M and 150 mm on L and XL. Both feet go flat, and the kickstand holds the bike upright while you load it. Focus builds this frame as a step-through (wave) in 7005 hydroformed aluminium.

Potholes, kerbs, tram tracks and gravel jolt less with suspension front and rear. A rider in a Facebook group put the need exactly:

"I want the SMOOTHEST riding ebike… but I need a step [through]."

How far will it go?

Bosch's Range Assistant estimates, for this motor and the 600 Wh PowerTube, are given below for an athletic touring bike with a derailleur at 100 kg total weight, 18 km/h average and 60 rpm, on a mixed tour with some inclines, mostly good asphalt, light breezes and hybrid bike tyres, in summer:

• Eco: about 166 to 171 km
• Tour: about 122 km
• Sport: about 105 km
• Turbo: about 97 km

Bosch states these are estimates that vary with the type of use and outside influences. More load, steeper hills and a higher assist level shorten the distance. Planning a rail-trail weekend? Work out the day from the estimate for the mode you'll ride and load the gear on the rack. If the bike is going on a car rack, check the rack's per-bike rating against the bike's 31 kg, and lift the battery out first.

Questions people ask

Is it worth it compared with a simpler step-through?

It carries a Bosch Performance Line drive, suspension front and rear, a dropper and a rack on one bike, and it is serviced in our Ivanhoe workshop with your first service included. Book a test ride and feel the difference on the street outside.

Can I ride it on the road where I live?

Focus and Bosch state that the motor assists up to 25 km/h and then stops helping. E-bike rules are set by each state and territory, so check your state's published rules before you ride.

How heavy is it, and can I lift it?

It weighs 31 kg (size M, 600 Wh, without pedals) and is made to roll from the garage or along the side path, standing on its kickstand at every stop. The battery comes out with the key before a lift. If the bike has to go up stairs every day, ask us about a lighter e-bike.

Will it fit me?

It comes in S, M, L and XL, and the dropper's drop is 100 mm on S, 125 mm on M and 150 mm on L and XL. We size you in the showroom and set the saddle, bars and stem before you ride away. The stem adjusts to set the bars for a more upright position.

Will I trust the battery at home?

It uses Bosch's own PowerTube battery. Bosch's instruction for smart-system batteries is to charge only with an original Bosch smart-system charger.

I've never heard of Focus. Is it any good?

Focus is a German brand founded in 1993 by cyclocross world champion Mike Kluge, with its bikes developed in Stuttgart and assembled in Emstek. This one runs a Bosch Performance Line drive and Shimano components, and we service every bike we sell in our Ivanhoe workshop.

What is the service like after I buy?
