Riese & Müller Superdelite5

The longer ride, the weekend away, the rail trail: the Riese & Müller Superdelite5 is a full-suspension touring e-bike with two Bosch batteries, 1,200 Wh between them, and suspension at the front, the rear and under the luggage. None of those rides needs planning around.

Superdelite5: two batteries, full suspension

Ride further than you do now. Two Bosch batteries, a PowerTube 800 and a CompactTube 400, give you 1,200 Wh between them. That means fewer stops to charge on long rides and touring days, and the battery stops being something you plan the ride around.

The suspension works at the front, the rear and under the luggage: a Fox 34 air fork with 120 mm of travel, a Fox Float rear shock with 110 mm, and a luggage carrier sprung with the rear. Jolts are taken out before they reach you or the bags on the carrier, so you stay comfortable over the whole of a long ride.

Heading for a Victorian rail trail in the school holidays? Two batteries and a sprung carrier for your panniers are made for days on the trail.

Got a long, hilly run you would usually drive, to work or the shops? The carrier takes 27 kg, or 2 x 7.5 kg of panniers, so a laptop, tools and a lock ride with you and the car stays at home. The carrier is child-seat compatible, and the bike takes a two-wheel trailer (check your state's rules).

The Bosch Performance Line CX does the hard part, with 85 Nm of torque as delivered, up to 120 Nm with Bosch's Performance Upgrade, and assistance up to 25 km/h as Riese & Müller specify. The rides you love take less out of you, and they stay yours. Got a hill you have started avoiding? One owner who stays on the standard 85 Nm setting says it climbs really steep hills. Put yours back on the route.

Body had enough of bumps? Suspension front and rear takes the jolts before they reach your back, and the 125 mm dropper seatpost lets you drop the saddle and put your feet flat on the ground at every stop. Keep riding.

The Superdelite5 is best for:

Range, belt drive and carrying loads

How far will it go? You have 1,200 Wh from two Bosch batteries. How far that takes you depends on your weight, the load, the hills and the assist mode: flat roads in a lower mode use far less than climbing loaded in the highest.

There is no chain to oil. A Gates Carbon Drive CDX belt runs to a hub gear: an Enviolo continuous hub on the vario, or a Rohloff E-14 with 14 speeds and electronic shifting on the rohloff. There is less to adjust and replace than on a chain drive.

Carrying and load ratings:

• Luggage carrier: 27 kg, or a pannier rack with 2 x 7.5 kg, your choice at no surcharge
• Front carrier 5 kg, handlebar bag or basket 5 kg
• Bike, rider and load together: up to 160 kg, with a maximum rider weight of 120 kg

Sizing is by your height: M suits riders 1.70 to 1.80 m, L 1.75 to 1.90 m and XL 1.80 to 2.00 m. We size you in the showroom.

Is it built to last?

It is made to be ridden for years. Riese & Müller guarantee the frame and rear swing arm for five years and the battery for two. We service it in our Ivanhoe workshop, with local support for Bosch electronics and your first service included at 300 km. John can help you find the best lock. Questions people ask

How heavy is it?

The vario weighs 35.2 kg and the rohloff 34.3 kg, measured on the smallest frame with battery, without pedals or lock chain. It is made to ride from your door, and the dropper seatpost lets you put your feet flat at a stop. If it has to go up stairs or onto a rack often, ask us about a lighter bike before you choose.

How long is the wait, and who services it?

Every bike we sell is serviced in our Ivanhoe workshop, with local support for Bosch electronics. Riese & Müller build to order, and a customised bike takes about three months to arrive.

Is it legal to ride in my state?

Riese & Müller specify the Bosch Performance Line CX with assistance that stops at 25 km/h. Rules vary by state, and your state transport authority publishes them.

Enviolo or Rohloff?

Both run on the Gates belt. The Enviolo shifts continuously with no steps, and the Rohloff gives 14 gears with electronic shifting. Tell us your hills and we'll talk you through which suits you.

Will it get stolen?

John can help you find the best lock. The frame lock and chain come on the bike as standard.

Whose batteries does it run on?

Both packs are Bosch's own batteries, a PowerTube 800 and a CompactTube 400, part of the Bosch system the bike is built around.

I've never heard of Riese & Müller. Who are they?

Riese & Müller is a German maker, founded in Darmstadt in 1993 with a full-suspension folding bike, the Birdy. They guarantee this frame and rear swing arm for five years.

Is this too much bike for me?

It is made for long days, loaded touring and long, hilly runs. For short, flat trips around town, a lighter single-battery bike will suit you better, and we'll show you one.

Would the single-battery Delite5 do?

The Superdelite5 is the one with the second battery, for long days and loaded touring. If your rides are shorter, the Delite5 gives you full suspension on one battery.

Does more power wear it out?

It leaves Riese & Müller at 85 Nm. Bosch's Performance Upgrade takes it to up to 120 Nm, and more power wears belts and sprockets faster.

Will it go on my car rack?

Check your rack's rated load before you buy: this bike weighs about 35 kg.

Can I get anti-lock brakes?

Yes. Bosch eBike ABS is an option, fitted with Magura MT C brakes. The standard brakes are Tektro TRP HD-EU835 discs.

What colours does it come in?

Moss or shadow, with both batteries carried in the frame. Colour availability may differ by country.
