Kalkhoff Entice 3.B Move in Moonstone Grey, step-through frame, side view

Step through. Both feet down at the lights. The Kalkhoff Entice 3.B Move is a step-through e-bike with a Bosch Performance Line drive and knobbly all-road tyres, so every stop and start is one easy step and the ride keeps going when the path turns to gravel. Riders choose this frame for how often a ride stops: traffic lights, kerbs, the shops, a photo.

We size you on the bike, our own workshop services it, and you ride it first on the hills around the shop. Step through. All-road. Serviced in Ivanhoe.

John says...

’If you are thinking about doing a bit of off-road combined with a commute or an around-town ride, this is the perfect bike - with wider and knobby tyres!‘

Kalkhoff Entice 3.B Move: sealed path or gravel

Sealed path or gravel, it is the same bike. The tyres are Schwalbe Smart Sam, 57 mm wide with a knobbly tread, on 27.5-inch wheels, and the SR Suntour fork gives 80 mm of travel, for rail trails, gravel paths and park tracks. Kalkhoff puts the Entice in its all-road range.

"I'm using it mainly as transportation around town, but it's also made to handle a little off-road."

An owner of an earlier Entice 3.B Move

The frame is why people choose it. The tube dips down to about the height of the pedal axle, so you step through, sit and set off. At a stop you step forward off the saddle and stand.

Battery, range and hills

Will it get you home?

Yes. If the battery runs flat, the assist stops and you pedal it home like an ordinary bike.

The battery sits inside the down tube, locks with a key and lifts out, so you charge it indoors. On the Bosch 4 A charger it reaches half in about 1.7 hours and full in about 4.5 hours, and you can top it up at any level.

How far will it go on a full charge?

That depends on the ride. Up to 120 km is the range we give for the Entice 3.B Move, and Kalkhoff says no exact prediction is possible. These change it, from Kalkhoff's and Bosch's own lists:

  • the assist level you ride in: more assist, less distance
  • hills, and how often you stop and start
  • headwind and the temperature
  • the total weight of rider, bike and luggage
  • the tyres and the surface under them
  • how you change gears and how fast you pedal
  • the battery's condition, since capacity drops slowly over the years, as with any lithium battery

The quickest way to find your own figure is a ride on the hills around the shop. Try each assist level on a real climb and you will know which one you use.

"Got a lot of helpful advice and took about 4 models out for test rides before making a choice. The area has lots of hills too, so great for working out what level of assist you are after."

A customer (Google review, 5 stars, September 2023)

The hill on your regular route is where the drive earns its keep. The Bosch Performance Line motor sits at the cranks and adds up to 75 Nm of torque to your own pedalling, through nine gears.

Who it suits, and who it does not

The Entice 3.B Move suits you if

  • you stop often, at lights, kerbs and shops, and want to step on and off with ease each time
  • your rides leave the bitumen for gravel paths, rail trails or park tracks
  • you bring the shopping home, up to 25 kg on the rack
  • you want the shop that sold it to service it, in its own workshop

It is the wrong bike if

  • you need to carry a child. Kalkhoff allows a child seat only on a rack rated 27 kg or more, and this rack is rated 25 kg. Kalkhoff also rules out child seats on the handlebars, and a trailer must meet EN 15918 and carry lights.
  • you want a mountain bike. This is an all-road bike.
  • every ride is on smooth sealed road and you want a road-touring tyre. Ask us which bike suits.

What riders use it for, day to day

  • town rides with a stop at every light
  • errands, with the shopping in panniers or a crate on the rack
  • short trips you would otherwise drive
  • a commute that runs partly on a trail, or climbs through a hilly suburb
  • riding in the clothes you are already wearing, wet road or not

And on days off

  • rail trails, gravel paths and park tracks
  • long loops into the hills
  • tours with photo stops along the way
  • driving to a trailhead with the bike on a car rack
  • your first e-bike, when you are starting from scratch

"I like to use my bike for errands, but also like to go for long rides into the surrounding hills. This makes it so easy!"

One Entice 3.B Move owner clipped a crate onto the MIK rack

It comes ready for wet roads, dusk and the shops

  • Mudguards front and rear, with edge protectors: road spray stays off you.
  • A MIK rear rack: panniers, a crate or a bag clip on.
  • An adjustable kickstand: the bike stands on its own while you load it.
  • A Trelock RS 453 frame lock with a removable key: the back wheel locks in a second when you stop.

Kalkhoff, parts and warranty

Are Kalkhoff bikes any good, and where are they made?

Kalkhoff is a German maker, founded in 1919 as a family business, and it describes its quality as "Made in Germany". That is Kalkhoff's statement about the brand, not a country of origin printed for each bike.

Its test laboratory, one of the largest in Europe by Kalkhoff's account, tests up to 2,000 parts a year on 30 machines: frames, forks, seat posts, wheels and brakes.

The parts that carry the ride are standard parts. The drive, battery and charger are Bosch Smart System parts with Bosch part numbers: drive unit BDU3360, PowerTube 500 battery BBP3750 or BBP3751, charger BPC3400. The gears, brakes and hubs are Shimano. Our Ivanhoe workshop services every bike we sell.

Kalkhoff gives the frame a 10-year warranty. Parts that wear with riding, such as tyres, rims, chain, brake pads and cables, are serviced rather than covered, and Kalkhoff treats a slow loss of battery capacity over the years as normal wear, not a fault.

We were Australia's first dedicated electric bike retailer. Our customers rate us 4.9 out of 5 on Google, and most of their reviews praise the servicing after the sale:

"The bikes sold there are sturdy, durable and the spare parts can be found in Australia. You can also maintain your bike there."

Questions people ask

What size do you need?

The Entice 3.B Move comes in two frame sizes in Australia: Small (43 cm) and Medium (48 cm). The right one is settled on the bike, not from a chart. Bring your inside-leg measurement, stand over both sizes and ride them, and we set the saddle, bars and stem to suit you before you leave.

"They are knowledgeable, patient, accommodating and will ensure they find the right bike to fit your needs, not trying to fit you into one of their items in stock."

A customer (Google review, 5 stars, May 2021)

Entice or Endeavour: which Kalkhoff should you choose?

Choose by the ground you ride. Both run a Bosch Performance Line drive. The Entice 3.B Move has knobbly 27.5-inch tyres and an 80 mm fork for paths that turn to gravel; the Endeavour 3.B Move rolls on road-touring tyres (28-inch, or 27.5-inch on the Small) for sealed paths. If your commute includes a trail, the Entice suits it. Ride both, back to back.

Is it legal to ride in Victoria?

Victoria Police sets out the rules on its e-bike safety page. For this bike, Kalkhoff and Bosch state that the motor is rated at 250 W and that the assist switches off above 25 km/h. Past 25 km/h you pedal it like any bike, and the assist comes back as you slow.

Kalkhoff's manual marks it as an EPAC (an electrically power assisted cycle) to EN 15194:2017, with CE and UKCA marks.

How do you keep it from being stolen?

Lock the frame lock whenever you stop and take the battery with you. Keep a note of the lock's key number, because Trelock can make a new key from it, and of the frame number stamped into the frame. Bosch also offers an optional eBike Alarm service through the eBike Flow app.

Four mistakes to avoid, and how

  • Hosing or pressure-washing it. The drive and battery are rated IP55 against dust and water, yet Kalkhoff says never hose, pressure-wash or soak the bike, and its warranty excludes damage from high-pressure water. Take the battery out and clean the bike with a soft damp cloth.
  • Charging with the wrong charger. Use only the original Bosch Smart System charger, somewhere between 0 and 40 °C. The battery arrives partly charged, so charge it full before the first ride.
  • Carrying it on a car's rear rack in the rain with no cover. Kalkhoff's warranty excludes that damage. Take the battery out first, as Kalkhoff advises for transport; at about 3 kg it rides inside the car, and the bike is easier to lift.
  • Missing the first service. It falls at 300 km; book it with our workshop.

Looking after it day to day: pump the tyres to the pressure marked on the tyre sidewall or the rim, and where they differ, the lower maximum applies. The drive and battery work between minus 5 and 40 °C. Store the battery off the bike, between 10 and 40 °C. Kalkhoff keeps the owner's manuals for the Entice 3 Move online. At the end of its life, the battery goes back to a bicycle dealer for recycling, never into household rubbish.

Before you book, check two numbers

Your inside-leg measurement decides Small or Medium. And Kalkhoff rates the Entice 3.B Move for 130 kg in total, counting rider, bike and luggage together; on Kalkhoff's figures for the bike, that leaves at least 102 kg for you and what you carry.

Book a test ride

Bring your inside-leg measurement, then ride the Entice 3.B Move on the hills around the shop, back to back with the other bikes you are weighing up. The workshop that will service it is right behind the showroom, at 1075-1087 Heidelberg Road, Ivanhoe.

One Entice 3 buyer wrote: "As someone with zero ebike knowledge, I needed a lot of hand-holding ... He listened to exactly what I wanted, recommended options that matched my needs, and patiently guided me through a test ride."

Another, more briefly: "Go book a test ride now."
